This Wednesday, June 29, HealthIT founders and folks joined A.T. Gimbel and the Atlanta Ventures crew for a discussion with four amazing entrepreneurs: Ali Rahimi, Jennifer Sparks, Stephen Thomas, and Danae Moya. These entrepreneurs presented their innovative services and discussed important questions for starting HealthIT founders, such as finding the ideal customer, biggest barriers to success, and important lessons learned.

These Meetups are part of an ongoing series of talks about Healthcare in Atlanta, with an objective of making Atlanta the premier place to start and grow a HealthIT business. The goal of these meetups is to facilitate connections, hear from industry professionals, and truly dig deeper into Healthcare problems that Atlanta entrepreneurs can help solve.

About the Event

The morning kicked off with 49 entrepreneurs diving into breakout room sessions. Here, they discussed habits and hobbies they picked up during the Covid Pandemic. In the rooms, attendees were able to network and take part in meaningful conversations. Following the breakout rooms, A.T., Ali, Jennifer, Thomas, and Danae gave introductions, and discussed their firms.

The Roundtable Rundown

Stephen Thomas

For Stephen Thomas, patient loyalty for hospital systems is an overlooked problem in the industry, which Lealta seeks to address. With around half of all patients moving from one physician to another, ‘leakage’ causes large losses in hospital revenue and issues for patients who aren’t understood properly. Lealta’s membership program provides personalized reminders and a streamlined fast-pass care. With this, healthcare institutions can provide both primary and secondary care with efficiency and long-term benefits.

Jennifer Sparks

Jennifer Sparks at Vacmobile strives to renew a long outdated and critical verification tool: Vaccine records. Currently, paper records get damaged or lost, and require constant scanning and reprinting. Vacmobile is founded on the basis of helping the over 100 million people who need verification of vaccinations through exception tracking, PHI tools, comprehensive self-reporting features, and fraudulence detection algorithms.

Danae Moya

Over 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug. These drugs are administered late after symptoms are detected and it often takes multiple different medications to find the one best suited to the individual patient. Danae Moya and the DelphiStem team use recent advances in stem cell technology to tackle these issues. With the use of stem cells, medications can be more efficient, have less harmful side effects to individuals, and preventable diseases can be discovered earlier.

Ali Rahimi

While Ali Rahimi was working as a health doctor, he discovered a deep rooted problem with patient-doctor communication: Patients would often forget to take their medication, or would avoid meeting with their doctors. Alyka Health is an app Ali Rahimi created to fix this; –using risk calculators, personal health journey functions and motivational tools, Alyka Health closes critical gaps between patients and physicians to bring personalized healthcare.

Lessons learned while starting their HealthIT company:

Stephen discussed how essential customer discovery was to his journey. His understanding and reevaluation of who his service was catered towards helped his company grow and develop.
For Ali, the most important lesson he learned was to surround himself with people who believed in what he was doing and build a diverse team which was willing to speak up.
Jennifer’s lesson was to never give up. Paper mandates in 2020 created a setback for Vacmobile’s integration, but for her “the hard things are the important things”.
Danae discussed the upfront costs which are inevitable in the HealthIT industry. She also talked about the importance of clear communication to the end consumer, as understanding the necessary information is critical for well-made decisions, especially when it comes to matters of health.

Barriers each founder faced building their HealthIT company:

Starting will always be a challenge: up-front costs cannot be ignored, as it is part of the startup process.
Sales cycles within hospital systems can be a long and arduous process: understanding it is key.
Staying rooted, committed and not getting worried is important for success; bring in the experts and listen closely.
Understand the product-market fit. The first iteration of your product will check off some of the needs, but improvements should be suited to the customer.
